The Big Lie About EV Sales
Posted on March 15, 2021 in NADA
By Mike Stanton, NADA President and CEO As someone who has dedicated his career to advocating on behalf of America’s franchised auto dealers, I’ve embraced the reality that one of my chief roles is to serve as Myth Buster In Chief. For years, one of the great myths that has persisted about the auto industry has been that franchised dealers don’t want to sell electric vehicles. It’s long past time to put this myth out to pasture. And it’s time to call it out for what it is: A lie about franchised dealers, propagated by the handful of companies that want […]

The Sad, Lazy Myth of the ‘Middleman’
Posted on February 17, 2021 in NADA
By Jonathan Collegio, NADA Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Many first year MBA students learn a marketing concept called the “Iron Law of Distribution.” The idea is that when you bring a product to market, you can change who owns the distribution channel for that product — but changing who distributes the product doesn’t change the cost structure associated with distributing the product. That is, you can change whether a factory or an independent company owns the retail outlet — but that by itself doesn’t change or make retailing costs disappear. This is a stumbling block for lots of factories […]

NADA Issues Analysis of 2020 Auto Sales, 2021 Sales Forecast
Posted on January 12, 2021 in NADA
The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) issued its 2020 analysis of U.S. auto sales and the economy. “The coronavirus pandemic certainly impacted new light-vehicle sales in 2020, not to mention the U.S. economy as a whole,” said NADA chief economist Patrick Manzi. “Our forecast at the start of 2020 estimated new light-vehicle sales would fall by one to two percent compared to 2019 for a total of 16.8 million units sold, but once COVID hit, we knew this would be a different year than anticipated.” 2020 came to a close with new-light vehicle sales of 14.46 million units, down 14.7% […]

Solving the Technician Shortage Crisis
Posted on January 3, 2020 in NADA
Every dealer knows that an effective service department is key to a successful dealership. Well-managed service departments keep our customers’ cars and trucks on the road, while providing a steady source of income for local dealerships and jobs for our communities. But today’s service departments are facing a crisis, in the growing shortage of skilled technicians to service America’s cars and trucks. It’s a crisis that will deeply impact our industry unless we get ahead of it today. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the automotive industry employs about 750,000 service technicians at new-car dealerships, auctions, independent repair shops […]

NADA: The Reality of EVs
Posted on July 24, 2018 in NADA
This is an incredibly exciting time to be in the transportation industry. New cars and trucks are safer and more efficient than ever. Automakers are introducing new technologies every day and will be deploying scores of new models with technologically advanced drivetrains and other features in the coming years. Partnerships on highly autonomous vehicle deployment abound between technology companies and OEMs. And all of this is happening while we are seeing major advances in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. For nearly 30 years, automakers have spent billions of dollars on the development and deployment of battery electric (EV), hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles. It started in 1990, when California adopted its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, requiring 2 percent […]

NADA: The Future of Personal Vehicle Ownership
Posted on July 24, 2018 in NADA
It’s hard to attend an automotive conference these days without hearing about the end of personal vehicle ownership. According to “conventional wisdom,” the proliferation of ride-hailing options like Uber and Lyft combined with autonomous vehicles (AVs) are destined to align and make the prospect of owning your own vehicle too inconvenient or too costly. I get it. We’re living in exciting, changing times, and technology is normalizing things today that for decades weren’t even on anyone’s radar. We’re also living in an era that rewards bold predictions far more than rationality. But as we all know, rationality still drives behavior. So the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has been probing to find out what […]

NADA: Our Commitment to Fair Credit
Posted on July 24, 2018 in NADA
In today’s market, America’s new car and truck dealerships sell around 50,000 new cars and trucks a day. Consumer access to affordable credit at dealerships, and interest rate discounts that local dealerships can provide their customers, are keys to driving those sales. Congress recently repealed a lending guidance issued by the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) that threatened to adversely affect dealer competition and consumers’ access to interest rate discounts. The guidance was repealed because of serious agency process concerns, and because it inadequately recognized that dealerships can provide competitive credit while fully adhering to our nation’s fair credit laws. NADA is firmly committed to helping dealerships achieve […]
